odd night light
odd, intense small light in the sky
in the middle of the night
at first i thought it was landing lights
on a fair-sized plane approaching
the airfield just northeast of my home
but it did not blink or move among
dense clouds and was too intense
i felt curiously chilled for a moment
and then clouds gave way a bit so
the intensity of pale yellow increased
and i recognized our moon
although little of it showed
how weird it felt had to see such color
with suspicions of something strange
in my sky
full moon entangled
comment from Eileen gives author hope
full winter moon entangled
in yellowish, green-gray, eerie clouds
fighting with brilliance to be free
of the fear those hoverers over earth
engender in mere mortals looking up
obscure reality
comment from Eileen gives author hope
night sky, even miles from the city
more gray than black
brilliant stars still insist on being seen
but many of their apparent companions
are faded by our neon and LED and arc lights while we try to keep dark reality,
as we try with old age, at bay
arched path of stars
comment from Eileen gives author hope
clear night sky
stars seen, not through mist
or haze or light pollution
but sharp, distinct
welcome as childhood friends
when the Milky Way
was near solid path
arching above me
moon and particles
no wonder we sometimes prefer our illusions
pollution can be beautiful
as when it scatters
the rising moon’s rays
enhancing illusion on illusion
that our satellite is huge, orange
and shining
