leaf stem works at its pinning

only after effort to find

that work had caused its beginning

of loss from foundation

from nourishment, nurture

from rooted communication

from connection to the future

tree roots prepare now for chilling

reach deep for what’s needful for winter

leaf lies browning, self-killing

grove sees it not as a splinter

that belongs from now on to tree

the leaf lies aground in a pile

its rot fertilization gift will be

but that will take yet a while
