we look, and what we see

we assume is all there is

we listen, now and again,

and miss the low croaks

and high-pitched squeals

of animals far more numerous

than ourselves and older,

more successful as a species

we wrap ourselves in artificial

light and warmth and shelter

from Nature’s e- (for essential) mail

notices of reality which carries on

whether or not we allow ourselves

to be warned
